Friendships Among Our Mothers with Special Needs Kids

Writer: Laura SharpeLaura Sharpe

Our mothers who drop off their kids have formed their own amazing community of support here!  The advantage to the class time for all of the mothers is that they are able to sit and visit together while their kids are having class.  They understand one another and can really encourage each other on the journey of having a special needs child. As their kids are older and progress is so slow, it is often the encouraging time they have with other mothers that really brings them back week after week.

Our Tuesday and Thursday classes are often very full as the mothers have to sit with their children to assist during their physical therapy sessions.  This is such an encouraging time for the moms that they will stay hours after to chat with the other moms.  They share different things they have found that work for their kids and general encouragement about progress they are noticing in the other kids.

Despite the cultural barriers to women having careers in sub-Saharan Africa, many of our mothers work full time outside of the home.  Some of them are teachers or lawyers or doctors who knew Shield City could help their children’s skillset. Mothers often bring all their children to the center when they bring in their special needs child.

Hear from mother Aisha about her experience bringing in her developmentally delayed daughter for play therapy.
