Parenting children with autism in Nigeria is challenging on many levels, so we are hosting a critical skills workshop for caregivers this month! Our amazing friend and resource partner Fatty Giwa (pronounced faw-tee, not “fatty” lol) is a specialist in educating parents of children with autism. The workshop will be in Hausa and English to make it accessible for all our mothers. Shield City serves more than 20 children on the autism spectrum. Our mothers have universally reported improvements in their children after their individual play and physical therapy at the center. For example, one of our little guys, 6 year old Jawad, can now communicate basic messages to his mother and siblings, after so many years of frustration.
During the workshop, mothers will hear lectures and participate in several group exercises to gain valuable tools for working with their own children. We focus on building life skills for children, such as motor skills, communication, and eating on their own. Studies show that early intervention for children with autism sets them up for better independence later on in life.
We even interviewed Jawad’s mother last year on her time with Shield City. Watch below!
